Why is Nutrition Important?
Targeting your glycemic index is a great way to lose weight
When people ask why is nutrition important, the first thing I usually think about is the glycemic index. Most people have never heard of the glycemic index even though it is a very easy concept to understand.
Every carbohydrate has a different ranking on the effect it has on your blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates with a low glycemic index produce small fluctuations in our blood sugar levels, while carbohydrates with high glycemic levels produce large variations in our blood sugar levels.
Think of your blood sugar level as a roller coaster As you eat a high glycemic index carbohydrate your blood sugar levels rise. As these blood levels rise your body needs to produce insulin to combat the high blood sugar. When the insulin is released your blood sugar levels come crashing down like a roller coaster. This is why often times after you eat a high glycemic meal you have low energy, your body wants the high blood sugar and it releases certain hormones and you start to feel stressed. You will tend to get hungry again and resort to another high glycemic meal. This starts a bad cycle and puts your blood sugar on the roller coaster ride, large amounts of rises and falls. After awhile your body cannot produce enough insulin and your pancreas gives out. This is when you can develop type-two diabetes.
Diabetes is an epidemic which is out of control Almost a third of all children are expected to develop type-two diabetes and this number jumps to 50 percent for black and Hispanic children. The reason people can have weight loss success with a low glycemic diet is because it is your insulin that stores fat. When you introduce low glycemic meals into your lifestyle your blood sugar levels don't rise as much and you produce less insulin which in turn means you carry less fat. When people ask why is nutrition important
, you can now tell them about the glycemic index and recommend low glycemic foods.
