Can Whey Protein effect kidney cysts?

by Ashish
(India)

I have kidney cysts that are genetically inherited and I'm skinny too so i just want to gain some weight. I want to know if whey protein can harm my kidneys or my kidney cysts?

Answer:

Large amounts of protein may cause you problems, however a normal amount should be fine.

1 or 2 servings of whey protein along with a normal diet should not cause you any harm, however if your condition is very serious you might want to consult your doctor.

Whey protein is a very pure form of protein and is easily absorbed and digested. Another good source of protein is eggs. Both of these have a very high biological value making them very easy for your body to absorb.

Whey protein and egg protein is a good choice, however don't abuse it. For your situation as a general guideline, do not consume more than 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.

Eating lots of pasta can help you gain weight. Try eating it twice a day for a few weeks and see how much weight you put on.

Kidney Problems and Whey Protein

I have one smaller kidney than the other as I was born that way. The smaller one is fully functional but in terms of work rate it's a 65-35 split between the larger and smaller kidney. I am thinking of starting a workout regiment and wondering if whey protein powder would cause any side effects?

Answer:

Taking a reasonable amount of whey protein should not cause you any harm.

If you take 2 scoops after you train, this should not be a problem. Unless you have a very severe case where your doctor has warned against consuming various protein sources, you should be fine.

Sticking to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight is usually the recommendation for athletes, however protein is beneficial even in smaller amounts.

Consuming whey protein in the morning and after a training session should be fine. If you want to stay on the safe side, don't consume more than 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, per day.
