Side Effects of Fish Oil

It all depends on your source

If your fish oil source is food, then yes there might be side effects of fish oil.

If your fish oil comes from high quality supplements, there's no fish oil side effects.

Whenever discussing side effects, it's always important for me to mention that if you have a pre-existing medical condition, do not take any supplements before talking with your doctor.

What I mean by nothing to worry about is: If you're taking fish oil supplements that are high quality, and provide a potency guarantee, you should have nothing to worry about :)

If however you choose to buy low grade fish oil, because they were offering a special this week, I'm sorry to say you might not be so safe :(

Let's make that a bit more clear

Side effects of fish oil come from the source. There's no limit on the amount of omega 3 fatty acids you should take. No limit meaning there isn't an established ceiling amount.

Other supplements have toxicity concerns and suggest a max on the amount you should consume, but this does not apply for omega 3 fatty acids.

Now I am not suggesting you start popping these pills like crazy. The extent to your benefits will not depend on the amount you take per day. It is important to be consistent, but only with an appropriate dosage.

If you follow the recommended dosage from the manufacturer you will be fine. If your supplements come from a respectable manufacturer, they will have the best research and science regarding how much per serving is the most beneficial.

So to make a quick conclusion

There are no side effects with supplementing your fish oil with a high quality product. No limit amount of omega 3 fatty acids per day has been established, therefore following the dosage amount from the manufacturer is all you can do.

Your fish oil source comes from eating fish, or taking supplements. We have quickly discussed the supplement side, now let's check out the food side....

Side effects fish oil can give you.... Mercury in your fish

If you only get your fish oil from eating fish, you may experience side effects of fish oil. The side effects don't come from too much omega 3 fatty acids, they come from contaminants in low quality fish oil, and other toxins and mercury found in fish.

Do you really have to worry about it? Well, there are mixed views on mercury in fish products. It's clear that these contaminants are present, but there's no exact guidance given. For you, it's probably not a problem. I don't think you eat fish more than twice per week anyway. If you do, the best advice is to limit for fish intake to 1 to 3 times per week.

Like most things regarding side effects, the extremes give you trouble. On the high end of the extreme factor; if you take significant amounts over the recommended dosage, you might experience side effects.

In the lower end of the extreme case, if you take low quality fish oil that may contain contaminants you may experience some side effects of fish oil.

The best advice: Limit your fish intake to about 3 times per week max, and take a high quality fish oil supplement. Easy as pie :)
