MMA Supplements

Find the right supplements to improve your MMA training

MMA supplements can play a key role in your development as a MMA fighter.

It's all about training and preparation in mixed martial arts, and your nutrition is an important factor.

We all know how much MMA fighters train. For many of them it's their passion and life, and it's a daily grind. But if you're training everyday, it's so important to make sure you're fully recovering.

One of the downfalls to training so much and so hard is injuries. Fighters constantly battle through injuries. If you can take the steps to try and avoid them it's well worth it.

One way to avoid injuries and over-training is to use the right MMA supplements. Sure a supplement may not be as effective as a new submission technique, but having the right diet will improve your overall health, which can ultimately affect how well you perform.

MMA fighters at the elite levels know how important their diet and nutrition game is. Some of them have specific coaches and trainers who only focus on their diet. Many of them use the right mix of supplements to help keep their energy levels up, recover from workouts, and build muscle and strength.

Here are the Top Supplements for MMA Training

The essential types of supplements you will want to use while doing MMA are protein and creatine supplements.

Protein will help you recover and grow

Supplementing protein while training is an effective way to stay fit and healthy. Different forms of protein supplements will help you build muscle and more importantly recover after workouts.

If you're tired and sore your workouts are no longer effective, and worse case scenario you might get an injury. This is when these MMA supplements can help.

Whey protein would be the first recommended supplement. With whey protein there's always the debate on when to take it, and whether you need to incorporate isolate and casein protein as well.

Ideally, your whey protein intake should happen about 3 times per day. You will want to consume protein in the morning, after you train, and before bed. Now, there are actually 3 types of protein you can use for these different intakes.

In the morning a whey protein concentrate blend like Optimum 100% Whey Protein is best because it has a mixed blend of fast and slower absorbing proteins.

Right after training a whey protein isolate like AST VP 2 is recommended because this type of protein is absorbed extremely fast which is great for a post workout shake.

Lastly, taking whey protein later in the day or right before bed is important for recovering throughout the night. A casein protein supplement is the best for this specific time because it is absorbed over a longer period of time while you sleep.

So those are the best approaches to using whey protein, however if you just wanted one whey protein supplement then using the basic whey protein concentrate is fine for all three scenarios. If you wanted to be very technical then incorporating all 3 is best, however you will still benefit from using the whey protein concentrate for each intake.

The other types of protein supplements which are recommended MMA supplements are glutamine and BCAA. These are both amino acid supplements which are the building blocks of protein.

Glutamine is the ultimate recovery supplement and unless you have good levels of BCAA then after an intense workout your muscles with breakdown instead of recovering and repairing.

These supplements are easy to combine with your whey protein shakes. Just take a supplement like Optimum Glutamine in either the powder form with your whey protein, or in the capsule form.

There's also a great amino acid supplement called Scivation Xtend that you can use during your workout and immediately after. You can read the full Scivation Xtend review here.

Creatine will help increase your strength and energy

Once you're consistently supplementing protein, another type of product worth considering as part of your MMA supplements is creatine.

Creatine can be extremely effective at supplying you more energy for quick bursts that you require in a fight. Creatine is not a supplement for extreme endurance athletes, however it can still be used for MMA fighters.

Conditioning is probably one of the most important aspects of mixed martial arts and your endurance will play a huge role in your success. Where creatine can help is in the area of your short burst of energy and muscle recovery.

Short energy bursts which are used for takedowns and throwing kicks and punches will come from your ATP energy sources. Creatine's main function is to create more ATP in your body. When you exert yourself by punching, kicking, or grappling, ATP energy molecules breakdown and turn into ADP. Creatine's role is to turn ADP back into ATP. Essentially this acts as a natural energy boost which is a huge importance while fighting.

Creatine monohydrate continues to be one of the most recommended forms of creatine supplements. Adding a supplement like Prolab Creatine Monohydrate to your post workout shake is a very easy way to get the creatine you need for increased energy and muscle recovery capabilities.
