List of High Protein FoodsCarry it in your back pocket for safe keepingBefore we dive into our list of high protein foods, let's review a bit about protein itself. Along with carbohydrates and fats, protein is part of our macro nutrition. Besides the water in your body, most of your weight is made up of protein.
Protein is in every part of your body:
The basic "building blocks" of proteins are amino acids. They form proteins by combining short or longer chains through a process called translation. Just like amino acids are the building blocks for proteins, proteins are the building blocks for the body.
When we eat, our bodies breakdown the proteins and let them do their functions. Because so much of our body is made up of protein, it is important we consume high quality proteins throughout the day.
What is useful about protein is that you can get it from a wide variety of sources. Each meal you have should contain at least one of the items on this list of foods. Because there are so many different types of proteins, and different functions of proteins, it is important that you consume a wide variety of foods that are high in protein. For example you don't want to just eat meat, and let that be your only source of protein during a single day. You need to switch it up and eat different types of food that contain different proteins. Looking at this list of high protein foods we can break it up into 2 types of protein: complete and incomplete. Complete protein means that it contains all the amino acids that are needed in order to build new proteins. Complete proteins are usually found in meat and dairy products. One thing you need to watch out for is that although meat is a complete protein, it can also contain unwanted fat. From the list of high protein foods the incomplete proteins are found in vegetables, grains and nuts. These proteins are missing amino acids that the body can't produce by itself. That is why vegetarians can avoid unwanted fats from meat products, but might lack important proteins that they aren't getting from veggies and fruits alone. The bottom line is complete protein may contain unwanted fat, and incomplete proteins must be combined with other incomplete proteins to create adequate amounts. Keep this list of high protein foods handy and make sure all your meals contain some source of protein!
