List of Essential Amino Acids
Essential and non essential are both important
Here is a list of essential amino acids.
These amino acids are not necessarily the best amino acids.
Essential refers to the fact that your body cannot produce them alone. You need to get them from your diet.
There are 8 essential amino acids:
- phenylalanine
- valine
- threonine
- tryptophan
- isoleucine
- methionine
- leucine
- lysine
How important are amino acids?
Think about protein.
It is found almost everywhere in your body.
It is always referred to as the building blocks of your body. If you're an athlete protein is even
more important.
When you exercise, your muscles breakdown. You need good quality protein in your body to rebuild
your muscles.
So if protein is the building blocks of your body, amino acids are the building blocks of protein.
These are pretty important nutrients for everybody.
Not having enough of these essential amino
acids can
cause health problems.
Your body cannot store excess amino acids, therefore it is extremely
important that you
have a diet which will provide you with all the essential amino acids.
What are the best sources of essential amino acids?
Complete proteins supply the best amino acids.
They are called complete proteins because they supply good amounts of essential amino acids.
These
natural sources
of protein are animal protein: meat, fish, poultry and dairy products. Health supplements are
also great sources of protein.
Including a variety of these complete proteins in your diet is needed in order to obtain the
essential
amino acids. If you're a vegetarian, then supplements like whey protein is highly recommended.
You can get protein from plant sources, but it is incomplete. It does not contain all the
essential amino acids.
