Are there dangers of Hoodia and other herbs?



Herbal supplement side effects are quite rare, but people have experienced them.

There are some Hoodia safety concerns, along with certain side effects from herbal supplements for depression.


Most herbal supplements have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

For the most part, there haven't been many herbal supplement side effects.

They do have a safe aura about them.

They have that home remedies feeling.

But a few thousand years ago, people were not being prescribed drugs and other supplements like we are today.

For the healthy individual, most herbal supplements are safe. Taking ginseng to relax at night, or supplementing herbs to boost your sex drive probably won't give you any unwanted side effects.

But mixing these supplements with prescribed drugs and other medicine, or when you have a pre existing medical condition may be a bit risky.

If you are taking any medication or prescribed supplements, or if you have some sort of health condition, it's always safe to check with your doctor before taking any herbal supplements.

Allergies can also be a concern.

Many people with allergies can take these "all natural" herbs and experience complications. Natural and safe don't always fit together nicely.

Like with any supplement, it is always very important to read the labels carefully.


There has been a lot of buzz about the dangers of Hoodia.

Hoodia is a type of cactus from Africa.

It has been marketed in the diet world as a powerful weight loss supplement.

Hoodia is believed to have the ability to suppress your appetite. Some African tribes would eat this plant to ward off hunger and thirst while away from home for long periods of time.

Because there hasn't been many good studies done on Hoodia, some of the side effects are not known.

From most of the research out there, it seems relatively safe. That being said, it will have typical herbal supplement side effects for the reasons mentioned earlier.

One concern was that if you take too much, you might not be eating enough food to give your body the proper amounts of nutrients it needs to stay health. So again, never take more than is recommended.

Quality seems to also be a Hoodia safety concern. You will want to try and get a product that has pure authentic Hoodia Gordonii. Taking cheap, low quality supplements is never a good idea.


Bottom line.... for the most part, these herbal supplements are safe when taken in appropriate dosages.

There are not enough studies to conclude the safety based on scientific facts, but many people have used them with success.

Side effects may occur for various reasons: Taking too much, mixing with other medications, having a pre existing condition, allergic reactions and so on.

Always stick to the recommended dosage, and if you're taking other supplements, check with your doctor first.

If you're a relatively healthy person but still concerned about side effects, start with a lower dosage. Introduce these herbs to your body in smaller dosages.
