Are Energy Drinks Dangerous?

What you should worry about

One thing that makes energy drinks dangerous is they way they are taken.

It's sort of like that saying: "guns don't kill people, people kill people."

The dangers of energy drinks really occur when these products are abused. If you head to your local corner store today and buy an energy drink, I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

These aren't some super dangerous drinks that will give you extreme side effects.

The concerns about the effects of energy drinks arise in the way they are used.

This can really apply to any kind of supplement. If you abuse it, you might get some kind of side effect.

Taking too much creatine, protein or vitamins may give you some type of unpleasant effect.

It just seems that energy drinks are abused more than other types of products.

Taking them once and awhile is fine. It is not healthy, and I would not recommend it, but you are probably not in danger.

The reason I don't personally recommend them, or take them regularly, is because there are so many better options out there. Simply creating a more healthy lifestyle will reduce the need for energy boosts throughout the day.

Also, the amount of sugar in a typical energy drink is pretty high. All that sugar in the form of extra calories is very unhealthy.

But, if you decide to try them, you're not in immediate "danger".

So when are energy drinks dangerous?

These drinks are not the same as Gatorade or Powerade. Energy drinks do not re hydrate your body like Gatorade does. Energy drinks can actually dehydrate you.

Therefore, there are certain times where you may experience energy drink side effects.

  • After a workout
  • Mixing with Alcohol

When you exercise, your body loses water.

You get dehydrated.

Good options are sports drinks or protein shakes. These types of drinks will help re hydrate you, and replenish nutrients that you lost.

Turning to an energy drink like Red Bull or Monster right after you exercise is not recommended. Because these drinks are known to dehydrate you, drinking them after a workout is not a good idea.

Are energy drinks and alcohol a bad combo?

Mixing energy drinks and alcohol can be dangerous.

This is another case of getting too dehydrated. Too much alcohol alone gets you dehydrated. Throwing an energy drink into the mix just increases your level of dehydration.

Dehydration is one of the major energy drink side effects.

So, are energy drinks dangerous?... They can be. If you take more than the recommended daily dosage you might experience some sort of effect. It can be a headache, upset stomach, or the shakes.

If you mix them with alcohol or use them after an intense workout, you run the risk of getting more dehydrated which can be dangerous.

So, yes, there are circumstances when energy drinks are dangerous. But also remember, people do these "dangerous" things all the time. I have personally served lots of vodka Red Bulls, and Jager Bombs (Red Bull with a shot of jagermeister).

These people at the bar were drinking tons of these drinks every Friday and Saturday night, and they were still kicking around week after week.

Again, there are environments where they can be dangerous, but if you decide to have an energy drink this week, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just remember, there are much better options out there to help increase your energy throughout the day.
