Calcium Overdose
Should you worry about calcium side effects?
Can you get a calcium overdose?
Are there calcium side effects if you take too much?
With any type of substance, taking too much can lead to complications. Even too much water can
cause you health problems. A calcium overdose is probably something you won't experience, but it
can happen.
Sticking to the recommended dosage of around 1000 mg of calcium per day will most likely not lead
to any calcium side effects.
It is important to make sure you're getting enough of this mineral
to avoid any calcium deficiency symptoms.
If you were to experience a calcium overdose, it would probably be due to some sort of calcium
supplement or medication you took.
You will find it difficult to get too much calcium from your
diet alone.
If you look at calcium rich foods, and figure out what you eat during the day, it's
highly unlikely that you're getting too much calcium.
I always like to point out that there are usually more issues with not getting enough nutrients
than taking too much. Most people don't get enough calcium and this can lead to osteoporosis. A
large percentage of people aren't getting enough calcium from their diet.
A calcium overdose may occur if your body can't get rid of the calcium it doesn't use. Your
kidneys play a role in the amount of calcium you have in your blood. Too much calcium in your
blood can lead to hypercalcaemia.
Hypercalcaemia might be linked to other health problems. Too much calcium in your blood may not
only be from consuming different sources of calcium. Health tests can be taken to find the cause
of the elevated calcium in your blood.
So calcium supplements and calcium sources from your diet may not contribute to an overdose of
calcium. Some other health complication may be at play.

A safe approach to calcium is to try and get it from your diet. There may be times where taking
calcium supplements will be important for you. If you are prescribed them from your doctor, or if
you don't get enough calcium from your diet, then supplements are useful.
Some people don't eat dairy products and miss out on a lot of calcium from their diet. This is
one group that would benefit from calcium supplements.
Sticking to these recommended dosages for calcium will ensure you don't get too much.
Keep in mind, that actually getting enough nutrients is just as important as making sure you
don't consume too much.
These figures are what you should try and consume on a daily basis. As a precaution, it is
believed that taking over 2500 mg per day may lead to some calcium side effects. Minor side
effects are usually constipation or some type of upset stomach.
Very high dosages can lead to nausea, vomiting, increased urination and kidney toxicity. High
volumes are usually associated with taking too much calcium in supplement form. You will most
likely not get over 2500 mg of calcium from your diet.
A calcium overdose from your diet is extremely rare. Stick to the recommended daily dosages. That
being said, for most individuals it is even more important that you make sure you get enough
calcium, rather than worry about taking too much.
